Right at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean sits Fortaleza San Felipe, one of the oldest colonial fortresses in the Caribbean. Built in the 16th century to protect the city from pirates, it offers a great dose of history with incredible ocean views. After checking out the fort, take a romantic stroll down the Malecón (the oceanfront boardwalk). It’s the perfect spot to grab a fresh coconut water, feel the ocean breeze, and watch the sun dip below the horizon.
3. Stroll Through the Historic City Center
Puerto Plata’s historic downtown is incredibly photogenic. Grab a Dominican coffee and take a walk through the central plaza (Parque Independencia), surrounded by Victorian-style architecture. Make sure to walk down Umbrella Street, a vibrant alleyway shaded by dozens of colorful hanging umbrellas, and Paseo de Doña Blanca, an alley painted entirely in bright, striking magenta.
